This cabaret program consisted of some of Schoenberg's Brettl-Lieder,
and songs by three of Schoenberg's most recalcitrant students: Hanns Eisler, Marc
Blitzstein and John Cage, interspersed with relevant readings from the
composers' letters. Pianist Thomas Sauer and I did this program four times at
the Café Sabarsky at the Neue Galerie in NYC, and at the German Cultural Center in St. Louis MO.
I plan to sing an updated version program (re-named "Harmonielehre Cabaret") in 2011 to mark the centenary of the eponymous book.
Thanks to the Arnold Schoenberg Center for use of the image, and to The-M for help designing the postcard.
A report by RJ Keefe.
